I've moved to a new email system that will let me tailor the newsletter for YOU. For instance, how do you like the frequency? Click one of these links and I'll email you weekly or monthly, whichever YOU prefer.

I like weekly updates. Keep it up.

Do you live in Bermuda or want more Bermuda-specific news about the America's Cup? YES.

Of course, eternal optimist that I am, it took me longer than I expected to get the new system working, so this Monday News is coming out on Tuesday 🙂

If you have any problems viewing this email, please "reply" and let me know what is not right.

Complete America's Cup World Series results here.

For the first time, neither Oracle nor Team New Zealand was on the podium. Japan got their first podium, thanks to winning two races.

  • Video: Wild Finish to the Regatta in Race 4

Four boats arrived at Mark 1, side by side, up on their foils, at 28 knots! Three of the helmsmen didn't realize how close the boundary was and got penalties for going out of bounds. SoftBank Team Japan gybed in bounds, then stretched out their lead for a comfortable race win and their first regatta podium. Artemis Racing needed to finish fourth or better to win the regatta, and they did - barely. With less than 100m to go in in last race, the regatta win was still up for grabs! Watch! Click to play.

  • Video: Capsize in Race 1 - First Time for Oracle to Finish Last

In the substitute race run on Friday Oracle came in last for the first time in the America's Cup World Series. They were well behind, still on the downwind leg, and did not see Artemis coming upwind with right of way. A crash tack avoided a collision but not a capsize. Oracle bowman, American Matt Cassidy explains. Click to play.

  • Coming Next Week

The Nautical Channel interviewed Alinghi owner Ernesto Bertarelli about the current America's Cup format and whether he will be back to the America's Cup in the future.

  • How many development boats can the teams build?
  • Back in February, I replied that they are limited to three. Since then I learned that the Protocol has been amended (again) and now there is no limit. Cost containment anyone? Oracle has built three and sold one to SoftBank Team Japan. Artemis has built two. Land Rover BAR has built three (although "T1" is a standard AC45 platform) and are rumoured to have a fourth in the works. Groupama Team France plans to launch their only development boat in July, and then use most of the components for their AC Class race boat, changing out just the hulls. Team New Zealand is using a modified AC45 platform on loan from Luna Rossa.
  • How do they trim the wing?
  • There are three main controls: camber, twist and the traveler. There is no mainsheet - the wing trimmer works the traveler and adjustments to camber and twist are made with control lines under the wing. I explain it in detail in a short video here. That's for the AC45. For the AC Class boats, the camber and twist controls will no doubt be run from a control panel with hydraulic rams adjusting the control lines inside the wing.
