Core Builders Video

From NZ Herald 24 June 2017, by Jane Phare

When the NZ Herald published their article with this video, Emirates Team New Zealand had beaten Oracle in all four races on the first weekend of the 35th America's Cup. ETNZ had started with a score of minus one point, since Oracle had won the "America's Cup Qualifiers" - the round robin with all teams racing. ETNZ had advance to the America's Cu Match, defeating Land Rover BAR in the semi-finals of the Challenger Selection Series and Artemis Racing in the Finals.

In this New Zealand Herald video, Tim Smyth, then head of Core Builders in Warkworth, New Zealand, opines that "You'd have to put your money behind Team New Zealand at the moment," saying that the Kiwis' superior boatspeed seemed to be coming from their foil and wing package. He pointed out that it took 12 weeks to build a new foil, so there was no chance for Oracle to do that. Tim goes on to say that if ETNZ were to win, which of course they did, that it would be disastrous for Core Builders since a strict "constructed in country" rule would dramatically reduce the work for Core Builders.

Of course, since then, the SailGP series gave Core Builders a lot of work modifying the AC boats from Bermuda into the one design F50 catamarans. The SailGP series of five initial races begins in Sydney in February 2019 before moving to San Francisco, New York, Cowes and Marseille. Six teams will compete: AUS, USA, GBR, FRA, JPN and CHN.
